The HISTORY:

1913 - founded by James Frank Graves & opened it’s doors for business at the Southern Depot on Washington Ave.

1932 - the operation was managed by James Henry Graves, son of James Frank Graves.

1947 - moved to a new building at 22 Graves Dr. behind Owens Simpson Lumber.

1952 - the wood structure was burned.

1953 - reopening of a new brick and metal building and the Incinerator was built and used to burn off the sawdust.

1964 - Due to environmental reasons the Incinerator was shut down.

1992 – Management of the mill was turned over to Frank Charles Graves, grandson of the founder J F Graves.

Graves Planning Mill made household molding for thousands of homes in the Upstate. People would come from miles around to have their lumber planed and moldings run. They were made to feel at home while their lumber was cut, even if it were just one piece. And while you waited there were plenty of peanuts to snack on and they would give you a bag to go.

In 2002 when Mark Ells was trying to sell some reclaimed wormy chestnut wood he had pulled out of an old foundry, he was told to go see Graves Planning Mill. Upon visiting with Mr. Graves, the conversation led from the lumber he had to sell to the possibility of Mr. Graves selling him the old mill.

Because the wormy chestnut wood was the factor that brought these partners together, the Ells’ thought it was only appropriate to use the wormy chestnut throughout the facility as the accent wood.

After purchasing the mill in January 2003, renovation began in May and The Sawmill at North Main was hosting events by mid November 2003.
